"Night and Day" was written by Cole Porter for the 1932 Broadway musical, "The Gay Divorce," starring Fred Astaire. It was the last Broadway show for Astaire and the last show that he performed with his sister, Adele.

In 1934 Hollywood produced a film version of the Broadway musical, retitled, "The Gay Divorcee." The Hays Office, Hollywoods self-censorship body, determined that the original title was too controversial. The film starred Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in their first leading roles together.

"Night and Day" was the only Cole Porter musical number used from the Broadway production. As a footnote, one of the films big production numbers, "The Continental," by Conrad and Magidson, won the Academy Award for Best Song that year.

In 1946 a film was made about Cole Porters life, called "Night and Day." The biography, starring Cary Grant as a heroic and heterosexual Cole Porter, was not accurate in detail or character, but Porter did not object.

Cole Porter was born in Indiana in 1891 to parents who were wealthy. He received an extensive musical education, learning the piano and the violin by age six. His favorite of the two was the piano which he practiced two hours daily. By age ten he was writing words and music to original songs, and by age seventeen he published his first song.

Porter also received an impressive academic education which carried him through Yale and into Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Music. While at Yale, Porter became the president of the Glee Club and a cheer leader, and, among the 300 songs he wrote while at Yale, he wrote two football fight songs that are still played today. Despite being the roommate of Dean Acheson, the future Secretary of State under President Truman, Porter dropped out of Harvard Law School to continue with his music education.

After World War I, Porter moved to Europe where he met and married Linda Lee Thomas, a beautiful and rich divorcee and a descendant of the Lees of Virginia. Their relationship was a loving, supportive, lifelong partnership. Cole Porter was gay and had numerous male interests which Linda had agreed to allow. However, the marriage was at times unstable when Porters gay interests threatened the couples carefully maintained social appearances.

Following their marriage in 1919 in Paris, the Porters lived an extravagant lifestyle in Europe through the 1920s. Their palatial home in Paris had floor to ceiling mirrors and zebra skin upholstery. Later, they moved into a famous palace in Venice where their lush parties included fifty gondoliers, circus acrobats, and a ballet company. They also built a night club outside their palace which accommodated 100 guests.

Back in New York, Porters first few contributions to Broadway musicals were poorly received. However, by the end of the 1920s Porter gained recognition, and through the 1930s and 1940s he was one of the brightest stars on Broadway. He worked excessively and tirelessly on his musical productions and spent time in both New York and Hollywood.

In 1937 a terrible horse riding accident crushed both of Porters legs. As the story goes, while waiting for hours for help to arrive he composed the lyrics to a verse of his song, "At Long Last Love." The accident left him crippled and in pain for the rest of his life. He underwent more than 30 leg operations until his right leg was finally amputated in 1958. Following his leg amputation, Cole Porter dropped out of music production until his death in 1964.

Porter said that the stimulus for the ballad, "Night and Day," was his memory of hearing distant tom toms while cruising down the Nile River in Egypt.

"Night and Day" was sung by Fred Astaire to Ginger Rogers in the film, "The Gay Divorcee." The romantic lyrics of Cole Porter and the lovely dance of Astaire and Rogers combine to create one of Hollywoods most memorable moments.

Oil is everything to your engine. If you do not regularly change your vehicles oil you will be drastically shortening the life of your engine. Before you decide to change your oil you might want to consider having it done by a service. For not much more than you will pay for a new oil filter and 5 or 6 quarts of oil you can have the oil changed professionally. If you still want to do it yourself, read on.

The first thing you need to do is gather the necessary tools and supplies. You will need the following supplies: a new oil filter, 5 or 6 quarts of the recommended oil (check your manual), an oil filter wrench, a socket set, rags and an oil pan to catch the used oil. Now that you have gathered the supplies we can begin. The first step in the process is to warm the engine up. Take the car on a short drive around the block to get the engine warm, but not hot. Warm oil will drain better but hot oil can be dangerous. Now position the drain pan underneath the oil pans drain plug. Using a socket wrench loosen and remove the oil pan plug to allow the oil to drain freely. Be careful of hot oil and try not to drop the plug into the pan. After the oil has drained you will then remove the oil filter from the vehicle using an oil filter wrench. Set the old filter to the side and clean off the filters mounting surface with a clean rag. Next get the new filter and apply a thin coating of oil to the gasket. Attach it to the vehicle and tighten according to the directions on the package (usually hand tight). Finally reinstall the oil pan plug and fill the engine with the amount of oil specified by your manufacturer. That's it, you are done. Now just clean up your mess and properly dispose of your used oil and filter.

I have worked and smoked for almost thirty five years and minimum wage has barely gone from two bucks and hour to seven bucks and hour over all these years. I started out paying three dollars a carton to now almost forty dollars a carton for cigarettes. I have seen our cigarette companies paying twenty five billion dollars to our government to help cover medical cost of smokers.How much of this money has gone to help with these medical costs? I believe that it is time our government to give smokers a break from taxing smokers that can not afford to pay forty dollars a carton. I do not try to get people to smoke. I do not agree with cigarette companies trying to make smoking glamorous to young people. I believe that every person has to make this choice whether to smoke or not.

I think that our government is taking advantage of smokers by taxing cigarettes to the point that no one can afford to smoke. I am a smoker I believe that our government is trying to take away our right to freely choose to smoke by taxing cigarettes on both ends. I believe that our government is bleeding smokers and tax payers on both ends.I believe that taxing products is fair but when you raise tax on cigarettes by three hundred times over this short a period of time. I think that it is time for smokers to write their local and federal government leaders to tell them to stop taking advantage of our smoking.

I have seen minimum wage raised from two dollars and hour to seven dollars and hour over thirty years and the cost of cigarettes have gone from three dollars a carton to over forty dollars a carton this is means that smokers have to work six to seven hours just to afford a carton of cigarettes. I believe that tobacco companies should not try to make smoking adds that focus on making young people smoke. Both our government and tobacco companies are targeting smokers one to sell their product and our government to tax smoking tax payers. I do not believe that it is right to tax cigarettes to the point where you can not afford something you enjoy doing.

People have the freedom of choice to choose whether they smoke or not that does not mean our government has the right to tax smokers for more then they should have to pay. You know smokers pay taxes when they work to.Why are smokers being targeted for something they do?I believe that both the cigarette companies and our government are taking advantage of smokers. One to sell their product that is addictive and our government taking advantage of smokers by charging ten times to much tax on cigarettes.

I hope that our government will stop taking their tax needs out on smokers only. I think that all smokers need to tell our government that it is not right to bleed people for taxes just because they smoke.I believe that people are being taxed out of every thing they enjoy I am glad that our tobacco growers support our economy and pay their share of taxes.

I am a smoker I believe that no government has the right to over tax cigarettes just because they know that smokers will continue to pay for their right to smoke. I believe that smokers have the right to be treated fairly by our government when taxing our cigarettes. No smoker has ever said that people should have to breath our smoke just do not tax us out of our right to choose to smoke.

I hope that our government will stop abusing their right to tax cigarettes and make a fair and final tax that will assure that smokers to do not get cheated any longer. I think that all products should be taxed fairly and not taxed because people like to smoke. Taking advantage of smokers has gone on long enough it is time to give smokers a break.I would hope that our government will realize that taking unfair tax advantage of smokers is abuse of our tax system . I believe that it is time to tax this product fairly for the rights of all smokers. Remember that even smokers vote to put you into office.

I would not advice any person to start smoking this is your right of free choice. I think that taxing smokers unfairly is not right either. People have been choosing the right to smoke or not smoke since our country was founded. It is not the right of our government to try and tax this product beyond what is fair just to take the right of free choice away from our people. I hope that our government will let me decide whether I should smoke or not. This problem needs to be looked at to fairly create a tax that will not take advantage of our tax paying smokers.

I hope that taxes on smokers are treated fairly now and in the future. I hope that our government will stop taxing cigarettes for more then a fair tax.
